In the Trapeang Prasat 3 Area Program, farmers face numerous challenges in food security and livelihood. The agriculture sector plays an important role in the communities generating daily income and food, but their production is still low because of climate change, disease, soil degradation, low capacity in agriculture practices, low access to markets, and so on. Furthermore, farmers are not aware at all of using their own resources for production or use for the purpose of generating income or food.
To promote food security and livelihood, the FH Cambodia-TPR-3 Area Program has cooperated with PDoA (Provincial Department of Agriculture), local authorities, and the local technical department to improve agriculture technical knowledge of community partner volunteer of agriculture (CPV-A) and key lead farmers who play a role as changing agent in the community. FH Cambodia in the Trapeang Prasat district has provided training and technical support on integrated farming systems – vegetable growing, fish, chickens, duck raising techniques and so on. With 25 participants, including 9 females in the agricultural sector, enabling them to offer technical assistance and form farmer groups to share agriculture knowledge and resources with other farmers through the Hope Group Volunteer of Agriculture (HGV-A).
As a result, this agriculture extension approach provides positive improvement of agriculture practices that adapt to climate change in their communities. This approach not only educates them on climate-smart agriculture but also provides better food nutrition in their family through farming and poultry raising and strengthens their communication with their communities.
