During 2023 and early 2024, the Trapeang Prasat 1 Area Program supervised the establishment of primary school libraries in four schools located in Ph’av and Ou Svay communes. These libraries were adorned with materials and storybooks to improve students’ reading skills and assist librarians in effectively managing the library. These efforts are part of the goal-setting strategies that are currently in use. The mastery of the Khmer language is particularly important in enhancing reading abilities.
Mrs. Thy Sopheak, a teacher at Popel Primary School’s 6th grade in Ph’av commune, highlighted that “Before the library was established, many students faced challenges in reading and writing due to the lack of reading materials. However, after the library was established in support of FH, there was a noticeable improvement in students’ reading and writing skills, making teaching the Khmer language less difficult. Students now eagerly visit the library daily to read and write, leading to a significant increase in reading levels and vocabulary skills from 50% in 2023 to 70% this year according to the school assessment.” Mrs. Thy Sopheak expressed her appreciation to FH Cambodia for their support in enhancing the educational experience for the children at her school.
